The garden in August looks like a very different place than it did in June. It's grown like crazy!

The Indian Corn tassels are a beautiful shade of purple, an indication of the color the ears will attain when they mature.

Gourd plants are extremely vigorous but the flowers need to be really well pollinated for the fruit to grow. So we have few gourds to show for all of that plant growth. Here is an immature Apache Dipper Gourd.

Here is our prize specimen gourd, which has already attained more than 4 feet in the length of the "handle"!

Here you can see the three sisters together, demonstrating the companion planting relationships that they are named for...sister corn is tall, with sister bean (look for the red flowers) climbing and twining around, while sister squash is growing low and bushy, cooling the soil beneath her leaves and effectively blocking the growth of weeds.

Here you can see the grains of rice developing. They start out green and will turn brown when they mature, just as the wheat did. Do you suppose that each plant contains the same number of grains? The students will find out after the harvest.
