Hastings Garden Mosaics

During the 2000/2001 school year Hastings students in grades 4 and 5 are learning about the mosaic art form, creating their own designs out of vitreous glass tiles. The mosaics are being made into 1 foot square paving stones, which will be used in a new Remembrance/Children's Garden in honor of retired teachers.

Students are able to choose anything in the world to depict for the subject of their designs, provided they are things that are found in nature. The Garden Mosaic Project will serve to incorporate children's artwork into the school landscape and will help foster an appreciation of art through the celebration of nature. This creative arts project was brought about through a collaboration between the Maria Hastings School's Beautification and Arts Enrichment Committees, together with our art teacher, Marcia Zichittella.

All of the students have really enjoyed this ongoing project and many teachers have expressed an interest in making tiles, too. Come back soon, because we will be adding more of the mosaic artwork as it is completed.
