The fourth grade has been studying ancient Egypt for social studies this winter. When our class started learning about life in ancient Egypt, we became fascinated with the many gods and goddesses that the Egyptians worshipped. We read stories, called myths, about the different gods and goddesses: who they were, how they were related to each other, and how each of them was important in the daily lives of the Egyptians. We studied the "family tree" of Egyptian gods. Did you know the ancient Egyptians believed that gods and goddesses would get married and have children, who grew up to be gods themselves? Some gods ruled on earth, other gods ruled over the skies and heavens, and still others ruled the Underworld, the place Egyptians believed people went to live after they lived their life on earth. We enjoyed learning about the most popular and important gods and goddesses in ancient Egypt, but we certainly couldn't learn about all of them -- there were over 1000 of them!
Each student in our class chose a favorite Egyptian god or goddess to research. In art class with Ms. Zichittella, we each made a mask of our god or goddess. When the masks were complete, we wrote a script for sharing our masks at All School Meeting. We hope you find this video of our All School Meeting sharing enjoyable and educational. Which god or goddess is YOUR favorite?
