December 12, 2000: Understanding Volume

Can you tell by looking at two glasses which one will hold more liquid? This week, our students estimated the volume of different sized glasses and then measured to see which container held more liquid.
First we filled two glasses with water to the very top. It was important to follow the same procedure with both glasses so the measurements would be accurate. Next, we poured each glass into a measuring cup and recorded the results. Our students found that the tallest glass did not always hold the most!
